Chinese Medical Palmistry: Your Health in Your Hand
Published in Paperback by Blue Poppy Pr (January, 1900)
Authors: Zong Xiao-Fan, Zong Xiao-Fan, Gary Liscum, Xiao-Fan Zong, and Gary Liscam
Average review score:

Highly recommended for students of alternative medicine.
In Chinese medical lore, every feature of the body is believed to contain a kind of hologram of the entire organism, just as Western medicine asserts that each cell contains the genetic code of the entire body. For centuries, Chinese medical practitioners believed that health and disease could be accurately diagnosed from an examination of the shape of the hand, the mounds and lines on the palm, and the fingernails. In Chinese Medical Palmistry, the authors have compiled a number of Chinese sourced information drawing from their extensive skills and experience as an American acupuncturist and a professional Chinese translator. Chinese Medical Palmistry is designed for use by professional health care practitioners (acupuncturists, chiropractors, naturopaths, and medical doctors) to aid them in their diagnosis of patients. It also has a great deal of value for non-specialist general readers with an interest in alternative medicine, their own constitutions, and curiosity as to their own health as reflected and revealed in their own hands.

Choosing & Using Hand Tools
Published in Paperback by Lark Books (May, 2002)
Author: Andy Rae
Average review score:

The title says it all
As a novice woodworker primarily interested in builing projects with hand tools, I have found this book indispensable. It covers a wide range of hand tools, describing selection, use and care. It also gives recommendations on how to start your tool collection; the essential equipment and where to find or how to make them.

The text is informative yet very readable. The pictures are full rich color. The author even includes a few projects, such as a workbench, to get you on your way.

Obviously, no one book can tell you everything you need to know about hand tools (after all you can find entire books on planes or saws alone), but if you want a solid basis to start your hand tool collection and use, I'd start here.

Classic Hikes of the Lower Left-Hand Corner of British Columbia: Altitude Superguide
Published in Paperback by Altitude Publishing Ltd. (June, 1998)
Author: Anita Cancian
Average review score:

The Classic book on West Coast hiking in Canada.
'Classic Hikes' is one of only a few highly detailed and informative books on the subject of hiking the West Coast of Canada.

It is surprisingly detailed in the amount and variety of information it presents to hikers\ of of all abilities, from extremely precise hiking maps extending to information about area climate, blister first aid, hiking boots, keeping clean and basic hiking survival.

The photographs were taken by the writer and give a realistic and colorful view of the area being hiked. The sidebars are one of the highlights of the book, giving some valuable and fascinating information on things that you may see and do along your hike not normally mentionedd in a book on hiking. The topics may vary from Ice Worms to rock climbing to surfing and cycling.

The crowning highlight of the book is its feature on rarely known information concerning the world famous West Coast Trail hike, such as mandatory registration and limited allowable group size. The variety and scope of the hike is fully explored from the mafnificant coastline to the caves, lush rainforests, waterfalls and rich wildlife.

The information presented in the book is sensible, humurous and easily understood by the beginng hiker while not boring the more advanced hiker interested in specific information such as hike ratings and emergency shelter huts.

It is rare to see a hiking book that combines all of the above mentioned information written in a unique and humuorous style for the hiker interested in hiking the West Coast of Canada.

Clinical Mechanics of the Hand
Published in Hardcover by Mosby (January, 1993)
Authors: Paul W. Brand and Anne, M.D. Hollister
Average review score:

clinical mechanics of the hand
this is a great book for anyone wanting to learn the complicated structure and mechanics of the hand. I use it as a bible when making splints and to understand the mechanical changes that occur in the hand after injury. It is a great resource for hand surgeons, therapists and anyone preparing to take the CHT exam. The pictures are great along with the text. It is a difficult subject that becomes a moderate subject with the use of this book.

Cold hand in mine : eight strange stories
Published in Unknown Binding by Gollancz ()
Author: Robert Aickman
Average review score:

Take Aickman's cold hand into a strange literary world
Robert Aickman (1914-1981), though he wrote plays and was active in the preservation of England's waterways, is best know for what he referred to as his "strange stories". Those seeking easy genre labels will, no doubt, insist on filing these stories away in the horror section. While this is not a completely inappropriate classification, it is more often than not misleading. At their best, Aickman's "strange stories" often possess many of the qualities of the horror genre (being weird, eerie, grotesque, etc.) while also sidestepping the conventional trappings of the field. My favorite Aickman stories leave me with a sense of unease and grim wonder beyond the ability of any other author I have ever read, the "horror" springing from subconscious realms and working upon those same areas in the psyche of the reader. Themes of alienation, squandered time, and sexual tension seem to be common in Aickman's work and "Cold Hand in Mine" contains elements of all three.

The book contains eight pieces:

"The Swords", "The Real Road to the Church", Niemandswasser", "Pages from a Young Girl's Journal", "The Hospice", "The Same Dog", "Meeting Mr. Millar" and "The Clock Watcher".

The most conventional piece in this collection, and thereby the most atypical for Aickman, is the award winning "Pages from a Young Girl's Journal". This is a fairly straightforward vampire narrative and, while certainly worth reading, not my favorite Aickman story.

All of the pieces in this book, in fact, are worth reading if you are interested in uncommon and literate fiction. There are, however, standout stories. For me these are (in order of appearance):

"The Swords" - An uneasy tale of sexual awakening, exploitation, and high sideshow weirdness with a strange young lady named Madonna (long before and definitely not the pop star).

"The Real Road to the Church" - A quite unconventional "ghost" story in which an unfulfilled woman comes face to face with. . .herself?

"The Hospice" - A motorist lost and low on gas spends a night in the title establishment. A tense and claustrophobic story that impresses itself upon one's mind like a bad dream.

"The Same Dog" - Love lost and cycles beyond human perception.

These four are Aickman at his unsettling and ambiguous best. You will find yourself captivated, moved and shaken by these stories and, if you are at all like me, you will not be sure what has actually happened in the narrative or why it has effected you. Rereading is almost imperative with Aickman's work if you seek to understand it.

Buy this book today if it is available (and consider yourself lucky if it is - it is a tragedy that Aickman's work is so difficult to come by).

Great recipes for a wonderful cause- Project Open Hand
The recipes I've tried have all turned out perfectly - they've obviously been tested - and the directions are easy to follow. My favorites were the crabcakes, the ginger scones and the four cheese macaroni. Project Open Hand is a terrific organization that provides daily, home-delivered meals, weekly groceries and nutrition counseling to more than 5,000 men, women and children with HIV/AIDS. I bought the book because it benefits Project Open Hand, but was pleased by the recipes.
